Riverside County, CA — Local residents are up in arms after they learned that their homes were just “vandalized” by overzealous police officers who searched and seized their belongings without a warrant. The residents claim that when officers showed up to their doors in the middle of the night they were not given an explanation for why their homes were raided.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office reported late Friday night that they were looking into the possibility that two unlicensed citizens were in the park after hours last Friday and that they had not been doing anything illegal.
“A citizen called 911 reporting an individual being in the park that was not doing anything illegal,” Sheriff’s Lieutenant John Corina said. “A helicopter was dispatched to the area and spotted a person running around. Upon contact with the subject, a warrant was issued and the person was taken into custody.”
The department says the male suspect and his female accomplice were released without charges.
The department says that it has been trying to reach the homeowners of the parkside home so that they can apologize for the raid, but they have yet to receive any communication from the department.
However, the department also provided footage to the Fox News affiliate, Fox 11, showing the homes being searched and items being seized by deputies.
As TFTP has reported time and time again, officers should not be allowed to raid homes in the middle of the night, much less take items from the homeowner without a warrant.
Sadly, many officers don’t even bother to get warrants before they search homes, and they feel that as long as they don’t damage anything during the search then no one has the right to object.
While officers were picking up the items they suspected belonged to the pair of trespassers, one officer noted that they did not belong to the residents.
“While conducting the search warrant, we noticed a backpack belonging to the male suspect and also a backpack belonging to the female suspect,” Lt. Corina said. “We don’t believe those items belong to those individuals. They were very confusing and very complicated to explain.”
When the residents of the home arrived at their front door, they were shocked to find deputies in front of their house.
