This is a blog post about the latest version of the amateur aircraft simulator, XPlane11. It discusses features introduced in this release as well as those from previous versions. XPlane11 is a general aviation aircraft simulation for Microsoft Windows and macOS primarily designed for flight training. In addition to being used as a teaching tool, it has been used for recreation and entertainment purposes including modeling architectural styles and building scenery within its 3D environment. The simulator's primary focus is on flight training through various levels of complexity that can be tailored to suit individual needs or interests. The simulator also has the ability to generate realistic 3D aircraft models, enabling users to create custom aircraft. XPlane11 has an extensive library of supported aircraft and scenery, with over 60 scenery models offered by default along with several additional models by download. Several of these are free for non-commercial personal/educational use. Many models are available for commercial use. The included aircraft were primarily designed for flight training, but do exhibit some differences in performance that can affect performance in real life. However, the simulator does not contain any instrumentation or artificial intelligence (AI) features. Most aircraft have been designed from scratch with functionality in mind. X-Plane 11 has been used for several commercial projects, including by airfields, flight schools and flight simulation clubs. X-Plane 11 was originally developed by Laminar Research in the United States and was released as a free download. The most recent version of the simulator is X-Plane 11 Professional Edition, which is a paid product. Laminar Research stated that they would no longer be developing the simulator in 2019 following a decision to cease further development for a proprietary product called X-Plane 10X, which was later released as "X-Plane 11". Following the release of version 11, Laminar Research redesigned its website which included a simplified graphic representation of the aircraft in X-Plane. The aircraft images were replaced by images of the vehicle type with text descriptions. These representations are akin to logos used in marketing. Laminar Research continued to update both X-Plane 11 and version 10 while concurrently developing X-Plane 11X, which had more advanced capabilities that are not found in any previous version of X-Plane. Version 11X was released on December 2, 2018, with the intent to "be both fun and powerful". The following are some example screenshots from version 11X taken from an amateur built scenery using freely available objects. Aircraft in X-Plane can be modeled in three classes: Aircraft in the second class are the most realistic and feature modern avionics and flight controls. These are available with various levels of flight simulation features, ranging from novice to expert flight training. The third class of aircraft are labeled "NG" aircraft. They are mostly free-flying aircraft not intended for flight simulation, but rather for recreation. Future aircraft that have been announced include: XPlane11 has seen several new graphics enhancements over previous versions, including new lighting effects, shadows, volumetric clouds and particle effects. cfa1e77820
